Treasurer’s Report: Julie Wrona reported. The 2006-2007 budget was explained and approved. The current balance of all 3 accounts is $96,992.85. The reason for the high number is due to membership and dinner dance donations being received before bills being paid out.
Principal’s Report:
Westbrook – Lori Hinton reported.
- Enrollments: PreK – 19, K- 157, 1st – 185, 2nd – 188
- New Staff: Megan Barrow (1st), Kacie McCabe (1st), Kate Cunningham (2nd), Katie Dhamer (2nd), Jeanne Horak (2nd), Kelly Beuthin (Tech. Facilitator)
- 3 successful fire drills have been completed. There will be a tornado drill and a lockdown drill next month.
- Students have attended assemblies on playground rules and lunchroom procedures. Spirit Day is the first Friday of each month. Peace Corners have been set up where students can go to “use their wordst” to work out problems.
- Picture Day is scheduled for October 16th.
- Curriculum night was a success and thank you to everyone who was able to attend.
- Reminder that the parking lot across the street is available for our use. For larger school events we encourage carpooling.
Glen Grove – Merryl Brownlow reported.

- Staff News: Mrs. Spreckman and Mrs. Sukenik are both due to deliver babies soon. Social Worker, Sandra Barman, was married over the summer and is now known as Sandra Salkover.
- School pictures will be taken October 24th.
- We had great attendance and appreciate all the support on curriculum night.
- This year each monthly assembly a team will adopt a piece of literature that emphasizes valuing diversity and also represents a pillar from Character Counts. They will present their piece in a dramatic format.
- Spirit Days will be held every Friday where students are encouraged to wear school colors or Gatorwear to show school spirit.
- Student Council representatives are in the process of being elected and the meetings will be held on Mondays.
- There are four types of drills for student safety. They are: fire, tornado, lock down and bus evacuation. The first fire drill and bus evacuation went smoothly.
- Chorus groups started up this week. Band and Orchestra recruited many new students. 60% of students are in a musical program.
- NWEA are being administered on laptops to all our students. This will be used in conjunction with our CBM data and classroom assessments to assist in determining program needs for our students.
- We had our 1st all school read on Sept. 1. These are bimonthly events where all staff members and students bring something to read and we spend 30 minutes together reading independently.
- Half days have been set aside for teachers to share and examine data from fall assessments to plan appropriate instruction for students. This will provide teachers time to plan for programming and flexible groupings to deliver quality instruction to each child.
- Officer Friendly will visit October 3 – 6.
- School Improvement Plan: the major goals are as follows:
Goal 1: To increase the percentage of students meeting their growth targets on NWEA in the area a reading to 70%.
Goal 2: To empower all students to develop ownership and responsibility for their own learning with a building focus on the area of reading.
Goal 3: To foster an educational community that values diversity demonstrating respect for all and taking responsibility for our own actions.
Teacher’s Report:
Nancy Kreloff from Glen Grove reported.
Over 80 students signed up for Chorus. They will plan a December concert and Reindeer Round-up for 3rd graders. 4th and 5th graders are learning patriotic songs. 3rd graders are learning the recorders. Thanks to the PTA for the digital piano. On Nov. 20 at the School Board Meeting, Glen Grove students will be showcased with their world drumming presentation. Judy LeSage from the LRC would like everyone to know about the Birthday Book Club. You can donate $10 and for your child’s birthday. They will be able to choose a new book for the library. A nameplate with their name will be placed in the book for them to check out first.
Committee Reports:
-School Supplies: The event ran smoothly with no returns. 24 students were given free school supplies due to donations by families.
-Wrapping Paper: Forms are due Monday, Sept. 18. Deliveries will be in the 3rd week of October. Volunteers are needed to help sort. Please contact Gretchen Meek for Glen Grove at 729-9535 or Lori Samataro for Westbrook at 729-6460.
-Fall Carnival: Forms are due by Sept. 27 and the event is Sept. 29. Volunteers are needed to run games, hand out food, collect money and hand out tickets. Please contact Tina Daly at 486-8037.
-Market Days: There were 31 customers this month with $161 profit for our schools. The next sale is Oct. 3. It is easy to order online with our school code 2674. We are now offering delivery to your home for $5. Forms will be sent home. Volunteers are needed on the delivery days for setting up and boxing the orders. Please call Melissa Celnik at 296-6461.
-Dinner Dance: The committees are hard at work to plan this terrific annual event. Many donations have already been made with many more on the way. Solicitations will be held on the phone and not door to door. Many businesses are willing to donate and need to be contacted with the information. Volunteers are needed for making these calls. Please contact Tina Skoubis at 724-0768 for solicitations. Contact Shelly Quill at 904-7598 for all other volunteering to help the various dinner dance committees. The dance will be held at the Northbrook Hilton on Feb. 9th.
-Movie Night: We are working on having 2 different movie nights this year. One being held at each school.
-Yearbook: The committee is looking for as many pictures as possible. Anytime you are in the classroom volunteering or on field trips please take pictures and submit them to Michele Fuderer at 657-0977 for Glen Grove and Rashmi Chandra-Mohanty at 657-9945 or rchandra555@yahoo.com for Westbrook.
-NSSED: Amy Kwit is our liaison for NSSED. The following programs will be held at New Trier Campus from 9:30-11:30. 9/19 – Disability Awareness Program at Meadowbrook for K-5. 10/17 – Foundations of Social Behavior. 10/21 – Impact of Childhood Disability: Parent’s Struggle. -Global Language: The programs will be starting Monday, September 18th.
Old Business:
Playground: Westbrook is still determining date to install new equipment of swings, circular monkey bars, and a climbing element. Glen Grove is postponed until the configuration plan is finalized. There will be climbing elements and side elements.
New Business:
Dining Out Night: Liz Cunningham will be heading a committee for “Dining for Dollars”. This program will be implemented every month where a local restaurant will donate a percentage of sales to the PTA on a specific night once a month. Places, dates and times will be posted in the newsletters sent home. In the month of September Gourmet for a Day will be donating to our schools. Don’t forget to mention the school’s name when you shop there.
