Meeting called to order at 9:22
Treasurer’s Report: Julie Wrona reported. We are now using Glenview State Bank and are in the process of closing out 2 checking accounts. The current balance of all accounts is $84,504.61.
Principal’s Report:
Westbrook - Lori Hinton reported.
- Enrollments: PreK/EC – 42, K – 153, 1st – 187, 2nd – 189 Total = 581
- Officer Friendly viited last week. Had 1st successful tornado and lockdown drills. The social worker is visiting classrooms to talk about inappropriate touching and privacy, and reporting incidents to adult.
- Friday, 10/20 is a school improvement planning day. The teachers will be focusing on differentiation of instruction and strategies for supporting English language learners.
- Halloween: no weapons, violent or extremely bloody costumes, please make sure your child can see and walk around easily in costume.
- Parents in Partnership will be held 11/11. Information will be sent home with children.
- Global Language began in September and are held every day of the week except Friday.
- Thank you PTA for our first cultural arts assembly of AC Rock. Students truly enjoyed the show.
Glen Grove - Merryl Brownlow reported
- Enrollments: 3rd – 137, 4th – 130, 5th – 125, NSSED – 9 Total = 401
- The first monthly assembly was 10/6. We celebrate how ordinary students can make extraordinary differences in lives of others. We emphasize the district’s vision statement focused on developing citizens that value diversity throughout the monthly assemblies. Each team will select a piece of literature that represents these values.
- The former school store has been converted to a collection place for various service learning initiatives we will support building wide. The first act of service will be the Northfield Food Pantry canned food drive.
- Global Language began in September. Classes are held everyday except Friday.
- There are 3 clubs at Glen Grove that are funded through the district. Student Council is headed by Mrs. Loeb and Mrs. Berichon. Chorus is headed by Mrs. Kabat. Art is headed by Ms. Hausman. All grades participate in all clubs.
- The first cultural arts assembly was 10/11 with the Thodos Dance of Chicago.
- The first All School Buddy Read was a huge success. The next one will be 10/27.
- The district is in year 2 of a three year reading initiative to implement balanced literacy in our reading program. The first two segments focused on Independent and Shared Reading. Currently, we are working on implementing the Guided Reading component. Staff is participating in a series of professional development activities related to this at the end of the month.
- Conferences are being held Friday, 10/20. Results of NWEA tests and goal setting will be discussed.
- Hearing and vision screenings are going on this week.
- Picture day is Tuesday, 10/24.
- There will be a Halloween parade that parents are invited if weather permits for outside. Parties will occur after the parade. For students not celebrating Halloween, an alternative Harvest Fest celebration will be held in the LRC hosted by Mrs. Berichon.
- The continued expansion for the playground has been put on hold until the building additions are finalized.
- The School Board approved the building addition initiative for the three intermediate schools that will be financed by existing funds available to the district. There is a committee meeting with the design team as the plans progress. On Nov. 16 there will be a public meeting discussing the additions. The addition is slated to be ready for the 2008-2009 school year.
- Officer Friendly and the Glenview Fire Department visited our students in early October.
- We practiced fire drills, tornado drill and a lockdown drill. The students responded extremely well during all the drills.
Committee Reports:
Wrapping Paper: Lori Samataro reported. Glen Grove collected over $10,000. Westbrook collected $15,330. The PTA receives 50% of the profits. The board approved to sign a contract for next school year.
Fall Carnival: The carnival raised $2,007.
Pizza Bingo: The event will be held 11/9 at Glen Grove. There is a slight increase in pizza prices. Please pre-order your pizza now.
School Directory: A big thank you goes to Julie Bruch for her time and effort in putting together the directory. Next year all the class lists will include the special education students in their mainstream classes.
T-shirts: The fall order has been delivered and the next order will be in the spring.
Market Days: The next delivery is 11/14. Volunteers are always needed on the delivery days.
Yearbook: Contract has been signed. Please take pictures anytime you are in the classrooms or field trips and submit them to the committee chairs.
Membership: We have reached our goal. There are 456 members and 35 teachers.
Other Business:
NSSED: Amy Kwit reported. Amy will be writing a Disability and Awareness column in the weekly school newsletters. This will answer frequently asked questions by parents and students. If you have any questions or comments please contact Amy Kwit at 832-1138 or amy.kwit@comcast.net .

- 11/11 Parents and Partnership program will have sessions involving special education issues.
Dominicks: The cash back to school program collected $250 dollars for our schools.
Parents in Partnership: This a free program for parents held at Attea on 11/11 with various topics during three break out sessions. There is childcare available.
Wish List: The first meeting will be held at Westbrook at 9:15 on 10/26.
Board of Education: 11/6 there will be a meeting discussing class size and impact of student performance. The board is looking for a camera person so the meetings can be broadcasted.
GEF: The annual fundraiser is 11/4. The theme is Havanah nights. There will be a silent auction.
