Baba Marta Vocabulary

Baba Marta- otherwise known as “Grandma March,” is a mythical Bulgarian figure who brings spring with her smile. She only smiles, however, when her siblings, January and February, have gone away for the year.

Martenitsi-  red and white bands of string that represent male and female aspects as well as luck, health, and return of spring. These are often gifted to friends and family as well-wishes for the year.

Storks- birds that are often associated with new life. If one sees a stork during March, one can bury their martenitsi under a rock for good luck.

Blooming Trees- blooming trees are also symbolic of good luck and if one sees a blooming tree in March, they can hang their martenitsi on the tree for good luck
