Festival of Lights- Hanukkah/Chanukah is often known as the “Festival of Lights” as menorah candles are lit for every day during its celebration.
menorah- a lampstand with 9 candle holders that is symbolic of Hanukkah. A candle is lit every night of Hanukkah to represent the lamp used during the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after the Maccabean victory. The lamp was said to only have enough oil to last one night, but instead lasted 8 nights.
dreidel - a four-sided spinning top used for a game played during Hanukkah. (Spin the dreidel)
sufganiyah/sufganiyot- a fried doughnut that is eaten during Hanukkah. It can be filled with cream or jam. Oily foods are associated with the oil used in the temple lamps.
latkes- potato pancakes associated with Hanukkah (Listen to a song about making latkes)
gelt- money given as presents during Hanukkah. When playing with the dreidel, oftentimes people use chocolate gelt.
