Federal holiday - a day designated by the federal government at the national level. On this day, federally operated businesses such as post offices and public schools are usually closed

Emancipation Proclamation- A document written in 1863 during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. It abolished practices of slavery in the United States.

Slavery -  the condition of being in servitude to another person without pay or agency over vocational and personal decisions.

Red Food & Strawberry Soda- red food is served in remembrance of the hardship and sacrifices of enslaved people

Galveston, Texas- The last place that received news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was on June 19, 1865, two years after the document was enacted. People make pilgrimages to Galveston in honor of Juneteenth
