What is Uttarayan?

A celebration of changing seasons as the sun moves to Capricorn or Makar, marking the end of winter and beginning of a new season. It is called Uttarayan in Gujarat, but can be known by different names such as Makar Sankranti, Maghi, or just Sankranti. It is celebrated through many rituals, but in Gujarat it is most known for flying kites (called ‘patang’), marking a time for people to spend more time outdoors as summer approaches that part of the world.
